Treatment for Ambien Addiction and Mood Disorders
Filed under Ambien Addiction Treatment
Mood disorders and substance addictions commonly co-exist. Although any addiction can co-occur with any mental health condition, most drugs have certain mental states that are most often associated with them. Ambien is a newer medication, therefore not as many studies of its addiction and mood disorders have been done. But, some studies have been conducted, and correlations are currently known.
A study reported in the March 2011 edition of Pharmacology Biochemistry and Behavior found that anxiety increased in animals that received the drug. Depression has also been associated with hypnotic drugs like Ambien, according to a 2007 report in BMC Psychiatry. A 2003 article in Experimental and Clinical Psychopharmacology noted that people who took the medication found in Ambien at bedtime reported worsened moods on the days following consumption. Sometimes, as in the noted studies, drugs may cause or worsen mood disorders. Sometimes, however, the scenario is reversed, and a pre-existing mood disorder leads to substance abuse.
Integrated Treatment for Mood Disorders and Ambien Addiction
People who have both an Ambien addiction and a mental health condition have co-occurring disorders. At one time it was believed that treating one condition would improve the other, but that is no longer believed. Integrated treatment in which all conditions are treated simultaneously greatly improves treatment outcomes.
Although addiction treatment programs should be tailored to meet an individual’s needs, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration has issued guidelines for working with patients with co-occurring disorders. Rehab facilities must perform the following services:
- Understand that recovery is a long-term process that generally includes steps in both forward and backward directions
- Provide for continuity of care during and after treatment
- Tailor treatment interventions to meet the challenges experienced at each stage of the recovery process
- Be sensitive to the cultural context of patients’ experiences
- Provide comprehensive services to meet interconnected needs, such as those in the areas of substance abuse, mental health, medical conditions, social needs and family relationships
- Address areas of practical concern such as legal matters and housing early in the treatment process, as doing so may help patients more fully engage in treatment
- Make treatment sessions compatible with patients’ cognitive and functional levels
- Engage patients with support systems, such as 12-step groups, family, and the faith community
